Bankruptcy Clinic

The Bankruptcy Clinic is a free service provided by the lawyers of the Oregon State Bar Debtor Creditor Seciton in partnership with Legal Aid Services of Oregon. The clinic is held once a month and consists of a class available to everyone, and attorney appointments which must be arranged in advance. (Clinic services are limited to Chapter 7 Bankruptcy only)

Bankruptcy Clinic ECF Waiver

The Bankruptcy Court has approved a limited waiver of the ECF filing requirements for attorneys who intend to provide legal services on a pro bono basis to chapter 7 debtors. This ECF waiver is available on a limited basis to attorneys whose only work in bankruptcy court is pro bono work. Schedule

The clinic is generally held on the third Tuesday of each month, except when this may conflict with holidays. Exact dates for 2010 are:

  • January 19 - Downtown Portland
  • February 16 - Beaverton
  • March 16 - East Portland
  • April 20 - Downtown Portland
  • May 18 - Beaverton
  • June 15 - East Portland
  • July 20 - Downtown Portland
  • August 17 - Beaverton
  • September 21 - East Portland
  • October 19 - Downtown Portland
  • November 16 - Beaverton
  • December 14 - East Portland

The Clinics begin at 6:00 p.m. and start with a bankruptcy class taught by a judge or experienced bankruptcy lawyer. Class are open to all residents of Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill Counties.

Following the class volunteer attorneys meet with clients on an appointment only basis. These appointments generally begin at 7:15 p.m.

Eligibility

There are no eligibility requirements for participation in the Bankruptcy Clinic class. However, appointments are available only to clients who live in Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill Counties, and who meet the Legal Aid income requirements. Those requirements will be explained by legal aid when you call to arrange for an appointment.

Appointments

Appointments are made through Legal Aid. Call either 503.224.4086 in Multnomah County or 503.648.7163 in Washington County to discuss eligibility and request an appointment.

Training materials for the Bankruptcy Clinic are available at www.oregonadvocates.org. Once you create a password, the site administrator will approve your membership in 1-2 business days.
